مقدمه
پدیده بنیادی در فعالیت سطحی، جذب سطحی نام دارد که به دو اثر کاملا مشخص منجر می شود:

پایین آوردن یک یا چند کشش مرزی در سطوح مشترک موجود در دو سیستم
تثبیت یک یا چند سطح مشترک به وسیله تشکیل لایه هایی که جذب شده اند(65)
یک ماده فعال در سطح ماده ای است که ضمن استفاده از این پدیده انرژی سطحی سطحی را که با آن درتماس است، تغییر دهد (66) کاهش انرژی سطحی را می توان به سادگی در مواردی مانند کف کنندگی، افزیش میزان گسترش یک ماده بر روی سطح یک جامد، افزایش میزان تعلیق ذرات یک جامد در محیط یک مایع و تشکیل امولسیون مشاهده کرد. کاربرد مواد فعال در سطح در محصولات آرایشی و بهداشتی پدیده ای جا افتاده است که بسته به خواص مورد نیاز برای فعالیت سطحی به پنج دسته تقسیم می شود :

شویندگی
هنگامی که مشکل اصلی، حذف ماده آلوده کننده باشد، مواد فعال در سطح با خاصیت شویندگی مورد نیاز است مانند خاصیت شامپوها و صابون های دستشویی
ترکنندگی
در محصولاتی که تماس خوب میان محلول و جزء مورد عمل مطلوب باشد، خواص تر کنندگی مورد نیاز خواهد بود، مانند خاصیت رنگ موها و لوسیون های فر دائمی مو.
کف کنندگی
لازم است هنگام مصرف برخی محصولات کف زیادی تولید شود. در این محصولات از مواد فعال در سطح ویژه ای استفاده می شود، مانند شامپوها و شامپوهای بدن.
امولسیون کنندگی
در محصولاتی که تشکیل و پایداری امولسیون یک خاصیت ضروری است از مواد فعال در سطحی که خواص امولسیون کنندگی دارد استفاده می شود، مانند کرم های ویژه پوست و مو.
انحلال پذیر کردن
هنگامی که لازم است یک جزء انحلال ناپذیر در یک محصول حل شود باید از ماده فعال در سطحی استفاده شود که خواص مناسبی دارد، مانند انحلال پذیر کردن عطر ها و طعم ها.
